This is how the 49-euro ticket in Munich – Munich works

The Deutschlandticket is valid from May 1st and can be bought from April 3rd. The city council on Wednesday gave a lot of praise for the implementation by the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV). Simone Burger (SPD) welcomed the fact that people without a smartphone can also purchase the ticket on paper or as a chip card. The paper variant is possible during a transitional period until the end of the year. The regulation for students has now also worked well.

However, the students still lack a special right of termination, Burger complained. Many would have gotten an annual ticket in September, they are now denied the change. The green-red town hall coalition therefore called on Mayor Dieter Reiter to continue to work to ensure that a change from the 365-euro ticket to the 49-euro ticket is made possible, and to campaign for the Free State to ensure that schoolchildren have only done so so far get the 29-euro ticket announced for students.

It is to be hoped that the ticket will have a long-term effect and that as many as possible will switch, said Clara Nitsche (Greens). She described it as a big plus “that the tariff jungle is simplified”. The city council unanimously decided on an amendment by the ÖDP/Munich list, which provides for future users of the Germany ticket to benefit from the discounts for the MVG bikes, as previously applied to Isarcard subscriptions. Tobias Ruff (ÖDP) said the ticket had the “potential to revolutionize commuter flows into the city”. If just some of them switch from cars to public transport in the future, that will have a major impact.

How much does the Germany ticket cost and where is it valid?

The ticket costs 49 euros per month, it is only available as a subscription and can be canceled monthly. Like last year, the nine-euro ticket is valid nationwide in local and regional transport, i.e. in city and regional buses, underground and trams as well as in the second class of regional trains. It does not apply to DB long-distance transport (e.g. IC, EC and ICE), long-distance buses and providers such as Flixtrain. Destinations near the border abroad can also be approached if these are included in the Germany tariff. These include Salzburg and Kufstein.

What are the deadlines for purchase and cancellation?

The Deutschlandticket must be ordered by the 25th calendar day of the month so that it is valid for the following month. Notice of termination must be received by the tenth calendar day of a month in order for it to be valid for the following month.

Who is the ticket for?

Actually for everyone who wants to be mobile easily and cheaply in all local and regional transport throughout Germany without having to think about tariffs and network borders. In terms of price, it is cheaper than almost all previous MVV subscriptions. Occasional users can also benefit from this: if you stamp two strips more than 15 times as an adult, for example, you are already over the 49 euros. However, it is still worthwhile to deal with the conditions and to check whether the offer really fits. For example, users of the discounted MVV subscriptions get off cheaper as long as they do not use more than the M-Zone at the same time. The Isarcard 65 costs 498 euros for annual payment for the entire M-Zone, and the Isarcard 9 o’clock costs 534 euros. On the other hand, it becomes really profitable for customers who have a regular subscription for several zones. For example, anyone who uses the Isarcard subscription M-6 pays EUR 2,304 per year, which is EUR 1,716 more than in future for the Germany ticket.

Is the ticket transferrable?

No, it is a personal ticket issued to the owner.

Can passengers take other people, dogs and bicycles with them?

In the Deutschlandticket there are no carriage regulations. Only children under the age of six can travel free of charge throughout Germany. The tariff regulations in the respective network apply to the transport of bicycles and dogs. The following applies to the MVV: One dog can travel with you free of charge. Passengers need their own ticket for bicycles on the U-Bahn and S-Bahn.

Where can the ticket be bought?

It is sold online via the transport company’s sales channels, such as and or at the Bavarian Regiobahn at It is also available in the DB travel centers. Anyone who uses the apps of the companies also gets it through them. It is only available as a mobile phone ticket or chip card. If you don’t have a smartphone or one on which the current apps are no longer running, you can also have a chip card sent to you. Since the MVG can only send the chip card in the summer, it is available in the MVG customer portal a print ticket available every month. Customers can simply print this out or use it on their smartphone.

How are ticket checks carried out?

During a check, passengers must show their Germany ticket and ID. If you cannot identify yourself, you have to pay a fine of 60 euros nationwide.

How can MVV subscribers switch to the Deutschlandticket?

The transport companies have announced that they will make the change easy via the customer portals. From April 3rd it will have to be seen whether this really works smoothly. Unlike the nine-euro ticket, the subscriptions are not automatically converted.

Are there free months or other perks?

There are no free months. However, subscribers to the Deutschlandticket can also buy the cheaper annual pass for park-and-ride facilities. The city council has requested the Stadtwerke München to offer the MVG-Rad offers for Isarcard subscriptions to holders of the Deutschlandticket as well.

Is the Deutschlandticket also available as a job ticket?

Yes. Companies can offer the Deutschlandticket Job if they pay at least 25 percent of the ticket price. The Deutschlandticket will then be made available with a discount of five percent.

Is there a subscription option with a discount for young people?

Not yet. Pupils and trainees continue to travel more cheaply in the MVV area with the 365-euro ticket. It is still possible to switch from the 365 euro ticket to the Germany ticket, but only at the end of the contract period. In Bavaria, a discounted Germany ticket for students, trainees and volunteers is to be introduced in autumn at a starting price of 29 euros. This should be available to trainees from September 1, 2023 and to students in the winter semester 2023/2024. This discount ticket should also be valid nationwide.

What happens to the semester ticket for students?

The MVV has decided on a special regulation for the 2023 summer semester. The student ID card with the MVV logo printed on it entitles students to travel in the entire MVV tariff area at no additional cost and without time restrictions from the start of the new semester up to and including April 30th. From May 1st, the usual rules for trips with a student ID will apply again: Monday to Friday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day, weekends and public holidays all day. The MVV recommends buying the Germany ticket in the future, the Isarcard semester will be suspended in the summer semester. Anyone who has already bought an Isarcard Semester for EUR 224.70 can return it up to and including April 30 without a processing fee and will be reimbursed the purchase price. The return takes place in the customer center of the transport company where the Isarcard was purchased.

What happens to prepaid subscriptions?

These will be refunded pro rata.

Will the MVV zones M and 1 to 6 be retained?

Yes, there are currently no plans to change the tariff logic in the MVV area. According to the MVV, there must continue to be a tariff basis, especially for the cash tariff offers for people who travel more occasionally with local public transport.

Can surcharges be levied on the Deutschlandticket for needs-based offers?

Yes, surcharges may apply for need-based and flexible offers such as call taxis, depending on the local tariff regulations.

Is the income from the Deutschlandticket sufficient for the transport company?

In the mobility department of the municipal utility, there is likely to be a shortfall of 70 to 80 million euros. Because of the adequate financing agreed for 2023, MVG assumes that at least this year there will be no losses.
