Olive oil could be more than just a healthy food. A study shows surprising effects on the risk of dementia.

The number of dementia cases is constantly increasing these days. However, this disease can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle. The way we eat plays an important role. There are certain foods that can reduce the risk of dementia. Scientific research indicates that regular olive oil consumption is part of this.

A group of researchers from Harvard University investigated in their study the connection between dietary habits and dementia-related deaths. They used nutritional questionnaires and death certificates, like this Central German Broadcasting (MDR) reported. The database consisted of more than 90,000 US citizens, whose data was collected over a period of three decades. A total of 4,749 of the study participants died of dementia.

Analysis of participants’ dietary data showed that people who consumed more than half a tablespoon of olive oil daily had an approximately 30 percent lower risk of dying from dementia compared to those who never or rarely consumed olive oil. In addition, it was shown that people who replace a teaspoon of mayonnaise or margarine with olive oil every day have an eight to 14 percent reduced risk of dying from dementia.

Antioxidant compounds in olive oil may have direct effects on the brain

The study found that the association between olive oil consumption and dementia mortality exists regardless of the rest of the diet. The scientists therefore assume that specific properties of olive oil could have a positive effect on the brain. Anne-Julie Tessier, the study’s lead author, explained that “some antioxidant compounds in olive oil cross the blood-brain barrier and may have a direct effect on the brain.” It could also be that olive oil indirectly promotes brain health by improving cardiovascular health. In contrast, ultra-processed foods may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, according to a study.
