Germany’s welfare state has come under discussion. First, the debate simmered about basic child security, which makes help for families even more complicated, then about citizens’ benefit, which the Union and FDP do not want to increase. And most recently, researchers found in a report for the Federal Ministry of Labor that the social system penalizes overtime at low wages in a number of cases. This is because the state then withdraws its support. Sometimes so strong that people end up worse off if they work longer hours than before.
