There are no Nazi marches in Wunsiedel: stage victory against the brown spook – Bavaria

When she hears a helicopter circling, Christine Lauterbach is energized and the feelings immediately come back. “The year 2004,” she says, “did something to me.” 4,500 right-wing extremists from half of Europe had taken control of Wunsiedel. Lauterbach remembers a procession around the city center in which people felt as if they were surrounded. Field paths around the small town in Upper Franconia were “blocked with building rubble” so that no one could get into the center uncontrolled. The police helicopter circled overhead hour after hour. Wunsiedel, that was a city in a state of emergency.
