A few days ago, thousands of liters of water flowed into the Berliner Ensemble. The damage is estimated to be very high – and what will happen to the performances remains uncertain.

The Berliner Ensemble appreciates that Water damage to the large house amounted to millions. “The shock is still deep throughout the entire house,” said director Oliver Reese, according to a statement. On Friday, during a performance, the sprinkler system reportedly sprayed 15,000 liters of water onto the stage and the room below. It is currently being examined to what extent the equipment – including headlights and sound technology – was damaged by the water. “According to an initial assessment, it can be assumed that there will be a large number of devices that are defective, some of which are irreparable,” it said.

When and how screenings can take place again as part of an emergency plan is currently being examined. “The complete repair of all damage will probably take until the beginning of the coming season,” it said. It is not yet clear whether Sibylle Berg’s premiere of “RCE” can take place on April 25th. Reese continued: “For us, every sold-out performance is of course a financial catastrophe. But it is also clear that we absolutely want to play for our audience again as soon as possible.”
