The writer, whose works are part of world literature, is considered a master of the classical German language. Now a linguist has found out that Kafka’s expression sounded different in Prague than previously thought.

The works of the Prague writer Franz Kafka (1883-1924) are part of the canon of world literature. At first glance, the texts are absolutely not suspected of being colored by any dialect. On the contrary: the great authors Kurt Tucholsky and Hermann Hesse recognized that Kafka was an “exemplary” and a “classic” German, a judgment that no one doubted for a long time. And yet it is not as clear about the language of Kafka as it previously appeared. To put it bluntly, according to the new state of research it can be stated casually: Kafka was a Bavarian-speaking author.
