The witch as a feminist: Exhibition on the persecution of witches in Würzburg – Bavaria

The last documented murder of a witch in Franconia took place on June 21, 1749. The sub-prioress of the Unterzell monastery near Würzburg was executed. In total, around 3,000 people fell victim to the witch hunt in Franconia from 1450 onwards. In Würzburg alone there were more than 350, including a particularly large number of children and clerics. You have to know that the crimes from the past are not visible in the city. After all, a year ago the city council decided to create a memorial. It is said to stand on the square on Schottenanger near the Main, where the shepherd, musician and preacher Hans Böhm was burned as a devil’s bündner on July 19, 1476. It is still unclear when the new memorial will be visible. The city has decided to rebuild the entire square on Schottenanger, which, in terms of planning, takes longer than just having the memorial built.
