In August 1943, Walter Klingenbeck’s parents and sister received a letter. “Dear parents and Lisl,” it says. “Today is the last time I have the opportunity to write to you. The request for clemency has been rejected. Well, nothing can change. Just do me one favor, don’t cry for me, you know what I’m dying for. I’m whole again calmly and look forward to what is to come.” He had just found out that his comrades had been pardoned, which was “a good consolation” for him, Klingenbeck writes. And: It would be good if his family prayed a little for him, “I wasn’t exactly a model boy.” He sends greetings to relatives and concludes: “Farewell and greetings everyone with love for the last time from your Walter.”
