The university sets up ten days of menstrual leave for its students

This would be a first in France. On the occasion of the start of the school year, the University of Angers announces the implementation of menstrual leave for its students. A measure adopted this summer by the Training and University Life Commission which will allow students suffering from painful periods to benefit from ten days off per year. “Or one absence per month which will be considered justified, without the need for a medical certificate,” explains 20 minutes Adrien Maslet, student vice-president of the University of Angers and master’s student in finance. Today we know of the great difficulties in accessing a doctor, who are not always well trained on this subject. »

“A simple declaration to the education service via a dedicated digital space” will therefore be enough to be exempt from coming to class. Objective: to avoid being penalized by too many unjustified absences, which sometimes deprive students of their scholarship or penalize them in terms of grades. “If the pain occurs on an exam day, the person will benefit from the same conditions as for another justified absence, namely a make-up session,” continues Adrien Maslet.

Referral to the university health service

The system, which was adopted “by the vast majority” also aims to improve the management of painful periods, by directing students to the university health service. As for the risk of abuse sometimes denounced when this subject emerges, Adrien Maslet does not believe it. “The well-being that will result from this will be much greater than the potential abuse,” judges the student vice-president. We are an adult audience who know well the repercussions that not going to class can have on schooling. »

The University of Angers has some 25,000 students.
