Theodore “Ted” Kaczynski, known as “Unabomber” in the United States, died on Saturday at the age of 81. Kaczynski was found dead in his cell in a North Carolina prison, ABC News reported, citing US prison officials.

Between 1978 and 1995, the former mathematics professor caused fear and terror in the United States with mysterious bomb attacks. He killed three people and injured more than 20 others. The attacks were mostly aimed at universities and airlines, which, after the initials (U.Ndiversity, Airlines) of these targets earned the name Unabomber.

For more than a decade, Kaczynski managed to elude FBI investigators. Eventually, he was arrested by accident. Kaczynski had proposed a deal to US newspapers out of anonymity. If they published a manifesto written by him, he would stop his terrorist attacks. The Washington Post eventually agreed at the urging of the FBI and prosecutors.

After the publication, Kaczynski’s brother recognized the writing style and content of the manifesto and gave the authorities the crucial tip. Kaczynski was arrested in April 1996 and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1998. In 2017, Kaczynski’s crimes and the hunt for the phantom “Unabomber” were in the highly acclaimed Manhunt Series been filmed.
