The winners were in line with the predictions (including ours) but it was a great evening between political messages and surprising moments. Not everything was successful – the fake live Messi dog applauding Robert Downey Jr was even embarrassing – but Hollywood played the card of the big reconciled family in the name of spectacle. During his introduction, Jimmy Kimmel made a joke about the AI that will replace everyone, a joke about the non-nomination of Greta Gerwig as best director for “Barbie” and a joke about Gérard Depardieu (but no allusion to the sexual assaults of which he is accused, just a story of vomit, Editor’s note). The best moment ? Probably Ryan Gosling’s song, “I’m just Ken.”
The committed speeches therefore followed one another on stage. Mstyslav Chernov, awarded the Oscar for best documentary, recalled that it was the first Ukrainian Oscar in history but that he would have liked never to make this film, denouncing the Russian invasion. The British Jonathan Glazer, whose “The Area of Interest” received two Oscars – best foreign film and best sound -, for his part recalled that “the victims of October 7 in Israel and the ongoing attack in Gaza are victims of dehumanization. »
The second Oscar for Emma Stone
But it was “Oppenheimer” which was the big winner of the evening, even if the prizes were well distributed with four Oscars for “Poor Creatures”, two for “The Zone of Interest”, one for “Barbie” , “American Fiction”, “Winter Break”, and for “Anatomy of a Fall”, that of the original screenplay. On stage, Justine Triet and Arthur Harari recalled the genesis of the film, in full confinement, between two diapers to be changed. The strangled voice of Robert Downey Jr. moved the entire audience when he spoke of his wife who saved him. Cillian Murphy, best actor, played the sobriety card that suits him so much.
For movie buffs, note that it was Steven Spielberg who presented the Oscar for best director to Christopher Nolan, like a passing of the torch between two geniuses of directing.
The only half-surprise of the evening was the second Oscar for best actress for Emma Stone, for her performance in “Poor Creatures” by Yorgos Lanthimos. “Killers of the Flower Moon” by Martin Scorsese and its magnificent Native American actress Lily Gladstone leave empty-handed. She had lost her voice.
