POLITICS – An ovation, tears and hugs. Emotions were strong this Wednesday, February 28 in the Senate after the adoption of the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution in the same terms as the National Assembly, paving the way for the organization of a Parliamentary Congress for definitive enact this constitutional revision.

The most moved was the environmentalist senator Mélanie Vogel, who was one of the most fervent in defending this text. In 2022, she had already proposed a bill aimed at including abortion in the Constitution but faced opposition from the right, recalls Public Senate.

The Senate “was not, by far, in favor of this project when we began to study it. A year and a half later we have an overwhelming majority in favor,” she rejoiced this Wednesday evening. “It is a magnificent message that we are sending to the whole world at a time when the reactionaries are gaining ground”she added.

Measuring the progress made and considering having won the “cultural battle”the senator let out a few tears as she left the chamber, when she received a standing ovation from dozens of people, as you can see below.

Emotion also from the feminist activists, a few dozen of whom were present for this historic vote. “It was difficult not to let my joy explode”, Floriane Volt, of the Women’s Foundation, told AFP as she left the gallery reserved for visitors. On the stairs of the Luxembourg Palace, one activist asked another: “Did you cry too? »

After the much-feared Senate stage, where opposition to this text was no secret, Congress will meet in Versailles on March 4 to definitively adopt the constitutional revision. This time, the activists are “serene” And “confident” and intend to make themselves heard to celebrate a “historic day”.
