Next step towards an Oscar: “The Teacher’s Room” has made it onto the shortlist for the best international film.

“The “Teacher’s Room” has taken an important step on the way to the foreign Oscar. The German contribution has made it onto the shortlist for the film award, which has been called “Best International Feature Film” since 2020. The pre-selection list includes 15 films that will be selected on May 23rd The final five nominees will be announced in January 2024.

In “The Teacher’s Room” Leonie Benesch (32) plays a young, idealistic teacher who accuses a colleague of theft and then goes into a downward spiral. The film was directed by İlker Çatak (39), who won the student Oscar in 2015 for his graduation film “Sadakat”.

Wim Wenders and KZ-Drama: These are the competitors and favorites

Among the 14 films with which “The Teacher’s Room” is fighting for the final nominations are two titles with prominent German participation. Japan has sent “Perfect Days” into the race. The German directing legend Wim Wenders (78) directed the drama about a toilet cleaner in Tokyo.

However, “The Zone of Interest” is considered the favorite in the category. The film by Jonathan Glazer (58, “Sexy Beast”) is a British-American co-production, but it was shot in German and Polish. “The White Ribbon” star Christian Friedel (44) plays the Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss, Sandra Hülser (45) plays his wife Hedwig. Hülser can also hope for an Oscar nomination for best actress in the legal drama “Anatomy of a Case”.

According to Oscar watchers “The Teacher’s Room” can also hope for a nomination. Along with “Zone of Interest”, “Perfect Days”, the Spanish film “Society of the Snow” and the Finnish entry “Falling Leaves”, the German entry is one of the favorites.

Germany is the defending champion in the race for the foreign Oscar. “Nothing New in the West” not only won the “Best International Feature Film” Oscar, but also three other Academy Awards.
