The idea has been on the table for several months. This Wednesday morning, Paris City Hall, through Anne Hidalgo, announced the implementation of a speed limit of 50 km/h on the ring road in the 2024-2030 Climate Plan, according to France Bleu Paris.
The announcement of this measure was mentioned by Dan Lert, his deputy in charge of ecological transition: “How can we accept that kids who live near the urban highways represented by the ring road are suffocating with asthma attacks, particularly in the popular neighborhoods of Paris? So, we are moving forward with the transformation of the ring road with the establishment of the lane dedicated to carpooling and public transport and the speed limit to 50 km/h on this major axis. »
A new legacy of the Olympics?
If no details have been given on the precise date of entry into force of the measure, France Bleu indicates that the date of September 14, 2024 was announced on the Paris City Hall website at midday, before the item is removed.
With the end of the Paralympic Games on September 8, it is in any case likely that this measure will be put in place after the event, as a legacy of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as the lane reserved for officials and athletes during the competition and which should become a lane for public transportation and carpooling.
A consultation launched in May 2023
Last May, the City of Paris launched a consultation on the future of the ring road, in which it proposed the perpetuation of this route for carpooling and transport, accompanied by a reduction in the speed from 70 to 50 km/h.
