The Socialist Party reaches an agreement with EELV

An agreement that could change the situation in the capital. This Wednesday, we learned that the Socialist Party (PS), which had already reached an agreement with the French Communist Party (PCF) for the senatorial elections, finally concluded an agreement also with the ecologists, and at the same time put an end to the internal war of the party with the federation of Paris.

During a national office of the PS this Tuesday evening, the management unanimously validated an agreement with EELV covering fourteen departments, after having concluded an agreement with the PCF covering fifteen departments in mid-June.

Four socialists, three ecologists and a communist

In Paris, the PS signed a union list with PCF and EELV, but without a member of the majority current of Olivier Faure in a definitely eligible position.

This Parisian union list, carried by outgoing PS senator Rémi Féraud, should allow at least 8 left-wing senators to be elected (out of twelve senators in the capital), said Lamia El Aaraje, president of the Paris federation. : four socialists (or relatives), three ecologists, including former presidential candidate Yannick Jadot, and a communist, spokesman Ian Brossat. For the secretary general of the PS Pierre Jouvet, the national agreement concluded with the ecologists and the PCF is “historic”, he told AFP.

France Insoumise probably on the sidelines

On the other hand, he considers it difficult to have an agreement with LFI, which has almost no electors, but hoped to be able to enter the Senate via an agreement with its Nupes partners.

In Paris, the leadership of the PS was at war with the Parisian federation, controlled by the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, notoriously opposed to the First Secretary, Olivier Faure, since the Nupes agreement of May 2022. The management blamed the federation for having chosen a list composed solely of socialists from the rival current Refondations, without granting a place in an eligible position to a candidate from the current of Olivier Faure. She had urged the federation to propose a “balanced” list, but the federation refused any modification, arguing that the activists voted “unanimously”.

“A historic agreement”

Tuesday evening, Olivier Faure’s camp finally accepted, in the name of “responsibility”, a list where its first candidate is in 9th place, “in a pivotal position”. “The list proposed by the Federal Council and voted by the militants of the federation has been adopted”, welcomed Lamia El Aaraje.

“We decided to bring together the PS and we brought this historic agreement with EELV and the PCF”, replied Pierre Jouvet. “It is thanks to Olivier Faure that we can send the signal, three years from the municipal elections of a rally with environmentalists and communists, behind a head of the socialist list”, he insists.
