If in the second season of the series The Bear the Berzattos’ family celebration escalates towards the end of the sixth episode to an extent that is otherwise only known from Scandinavian cinema, one has one of the most violent of all television hours behind oneself. Dialogues have turned into maelstroms, the characters are entangled in multi-track psychodramas, and in the middle the feast threatens to boil away, the preparation of which the matriarch controls with half a dozen egg timers, which soon shrill like air raid sirens through the increasingly fragile idyll. TV doesn’t get any better than that. With this double episode, showrunner Christopher Storer also puts everything that happened before in a new context.
