Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is getting his own new Fast & Furious movie. The new flick aims to continue the saga – but without any of the other main characters of the famous film series.
After his acclaimed return in an end credits scene from “Fast & Furious 10”, it is now certain that superstar Dwayne Johnson (51) will receive his own new “Fast & Furious” film. “The Rock” itself announced this on social networks with the words “Luke Hobbs will return to the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise”. According to industry magazine The Hollywood Reporter the Universal film studio has also officially announced another, as yet untitled part of the successful film series starring Johnson.
The new “Fast & Furious” film, which is in development at Universal, is intended to continue “Fast & Furious 10”, which was only released in German cinemas on May 17th, and lead over to the still untitled “Fast & Furious 11 “.
The Dwayne Johnson film that has now been announced is not a sequel to “Hobbs & Shaw”, the 2019 spin-off film in which Johnson and action star Jason Statham (55) were the focus of the plot.
“Vin Diesel and I put all of that behind us”
This development is particularly noteworthy because of the years of public differences between Johnson and “Fast & Furious” boss Vin Diesel (55). Johnson said so in December 2021that there was “no chance” of his return to the hit franchise – only to return for a cameo in Fast & Furious 10 this year.
Johnson announces this in his current Instagram post: “Last summer, Vin Diesel and I put all of that behind us. We will lead as brothers and with determination.”
In addition to “The Rock” other “Fast & Furious” stars
As “The Hollywood Reporter” has learned from inside sources, several other stars of the “Fast & Furious” film series are likely to appear in the now announced Dwayne Johnson film – but not Vin Diesel. According to the US trade journal, the two action stars, who have been in a clinch for so long, “found a way to reunite behind the screen, but not on the screen”.
Chris Morgan (56), the author of “Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw”, is responsible for the screenplay of the now announced Dwayne Johnson film. The scripts for “Fast & Furious 3-8” also come from Morgan’s pen. A start date has not yet been set.
