“The Ring of the Nibelung”: Richard Wagner’s opera cycle as a comic

Richard Wagner needed four evenings and around 16 hours of performance for his stage version of “Ring des Nibelungen”. Loriot managed the feat of concocting the four-part opera cycle into “The Ring in One Evening”. For those who like it even more compact, there is now another option: the famous American illustrator P. Craig Russell has created a comic version of Wagner’s tetralogy. It was published in English 20 years ago, the publisher Cross Cult has now published the book in German.

The American artist is one of the greats in the comic scene. He worked for Marvel Comics as early as 1976 and later also contributed to the “Batman” universe. Russell also has an affinity for classical music. He has already presented comic adaptations of Mozart’s “Magic Flute”, Richard Strauss’ “Salome” and the Debussy opera “Pelléas und Mélisande”. “The Ring of the Nibelung” was published more than 20 years ago and is now available in German for the first time.
