Haunerland was born on March 29, 1956 in Essen, studied Catholic theology in Bochum, Tübingen and Munich and was ordained a priest in 1982. There he continued his studies at the LMU until he received his doctorate and finally received his habilitation in liturgical science. Parallel to his studies, Winfried Haunerland was active in the training of priests. In 2003 he was awarded the papal honorary title of Monsignor for his services. In 2005 he was made head of the Ducal Georgianum, the inter-diocesan seminary in Munich. For many years he was a member of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem and in 2017 he took over the office of clergyman of the German Lieutenancy of the Order. He was involved in word and deed for the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, for example as a member of the diocesan commission for liturgy and church music. In September 2006, Haunerland was instrumental in preparing the home visit of Pope Benedict XVI. involved.
