the president outlines the contours of the end-of-life reform, and “assumes to take the time”

“I assume I will take the time”. Guest of the show “C à vous”, Wednesday December 20, on France 5, live from the Elysée, Emmanuel Macron returned to the still vague timetable of the law on the end of life, nine months after the conclusion of a citizens’ convention on this theme. The head of state, however, set out some guidelines. “We will not pass a law that affects children”he assured. “We will not pass a law that treats psychiatric cases, mentally retarded people or people who want to commit suicide.” Follow his interview in our live stream.

Emmanuel Macron “takes responsibility” for the immigration bill. The President of the Republic considers that this is a “useful text”, which he described as “the shield that we lacked”, the day after the chaotic adoption of the bill. Asked about the relative majority which complicates life for his camp in the Assembly, Emmanuel Macron declared that he intended to continue his program whatever happens: “I still have three and a half years ahead of me. I don’t plan to stop there.”

“Respect” for the resigning Minister of Health. Emmanuel Macron said he respected the choice of the former Minister of Health, Aurélien Rousseau, who resigned on Wednesday in disagreement with the immigration bill. He also testified “his respect” towards the deputies who did not vote for the bill.

Friction points. Asked about the new measures provided for by the bill, Emmanuel Macron says he disapproves of the deposit required from foreign students. “I don’t think it’s a good idea.”, he declares. An opinion shared by Dean Lewis, the vice-president of France Universités, who even judges it “discriminatory”.

Left-wing departments refuse to apply the future law. At the local level, the text on immigration does not pass in certain territories. The 32 departments led by the left declare that they will not apply the “national preference” for the personalized autonomy allowance (APA), which will now be conditional on five years of presence on French territory for unemployed foreigners, and two and a half years for those who have a job.
