The “Popular Primary” vote scheduled for January 13-16

The vote for the “Popular Primary” will take place from January 13 to 16, 2022, the organizers of the citizen movement announced on Wednesday, whose objective is to nominate a common candidate to the left for the presidential election. In total, “more than 130,000 people” registered on the “Primary People” platform and voted to bring out five men and five women, including three left-wing candidates declared at the Elysee Palace: the socialist Anne Hidalgo, the ecologist Yannick Jadot and Insoumis Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

The ten personalities selected have until November 30 to announce whether or not they wish to participate in the “Popular Primary”, leaving “a month and a half to create the conditions for victory,” explained Mathilde Imer, spokesperson for the “Popular Primary”. “The citizens will cast their vote in a majority judgment and single-round ballot,” the organizers said in a statement.

The vote will be held “three months” from the first round of the presidential election scheduled for April 10: “This will be the best time to propel a candidacy for a rally which is aimed at all French people,” pleaded the spokesperson. word of the “Popular Primary”, Samuel Grzybowski, quoted in the press release.

Debates organized before the vote

“Information points” and “registration to vote” will be held “everywhere in France” in the coming weeks to “inform and support as many people as possible to participate”. Debates will also be organized “between the official candidates”, detailed the organizers, without however specifying a timetable. Since July 11, this “Popular Primary” has organized a vast national consultation with the objective of “bringing to an end a process of designation by the citizens of a common candidacy in the first round of the presidential election of 2022 ”.

The organizers of the primary had initially announced that those enrolled in the primary would choose among these ten candidates between December 9 and 12, but to adapt “to the calendar of the various candidates selected to participate in the vote”, the date of the final vote was finally postponed to mid-January 2022.
