The politician Erwin Huber studied philosophy. – Bavaria

The former Minister of State and CSU boss Erwin Huber, 75, has a university degree in philosophy. He thought the whole thing would be easier, he says, but he doesn’t regret taking on the burden of studying when he retired.

The former Minister of State and CSU Chairman Erwin Huber, 75, completed a six-semester course at the University of Philosophy with a degree in Philosophy. Huber managed the predicate “good”. Of course, nothing was given to the politician, who lives in Reisbach in Lower Bavaria. “I worked my ass off there,” he says. “I thought it would be easier.” Huber had to complete six oral exams, two written exams and two term papers. He really had to cram, he says, but he doesn’t regret having put himself through this workload when he retired. “It was like a fountain of youth.” The young people in particular had made a big impression on him, he says. “I have to renounce some stupid statements from the past.” During his studies he was impressed by the old guard of philosophers from Plato to Descartes, but he was primarily fascinated by contemporary philosophers like Habermas. “There’s more in life.” In autumn 2018, Huber switched directly from politics to university. “That was a good thing,” he says, because that’s how he kept the machine running after 40 years of politics instead of rusting up quickly. “Politics is a struggle,” he says, adding that the philosophy has made him more thoughtful and relaxed. Huber concludes that more thoughtfulness would do no harm to politicians.
