The police officer who shot and killed a 19-year-old young man after a check on Sunday evening in Cherbourg (Manche) was indicted on Tuesday for intentional homicide, the Coutances prosecutor’s office announced.
“The police officer was placed under strict judicial control” which notably prohibits her from going to Cherbourg and from exercising police activity, added the public prosecutor of Coutances Gauthier Poupeau in a press release.
A murder complaint
The mother of Sullivan S., the young 19-year-old boilermaker who died after being shot by a police officer, filed a murder complaint against the policewoman, according to information from the Parisian. His lawyer, Maître Yassine Bouzrou, filed a complaint for intentional homicide this Tuesday with the Cherbourg public prosecutor.
The crew, made up of three police officers, was trying to control a vehicle traveling at excessive speed around 11:40 p.m. Sunday in Cherbourg, in Manche. The driver did not comply with the warnings and continued on his way before being forced to stop by the vehicle of a second police crew. The policewoman fired as the young man tried to escape on foot from the car, which turned out to be stolen.
Lack of understanding from loved ones
Why did you open fire? This question obsesses Sulivan S’s mother. In the text of the complaint, the lawyer explains that “the police officer shot Sulivan at a very short distance and the bullet hit him in the chest. When the police officer fired, she was necessarily aware that firing a firearm in the direction of a vital area such as the chest could lead to the latter’s death.
Those close to the young man question the justification for this shooting when Sulivan S. was not armed and did not a priori present any danger to the police. The conditions of the shooting will be one of the central points to be examined by the IGPN, responsible for the case which was transmitted to the criminal division of the Coutances judicial court.
