“Files of domestic violence handled by the police or the gendarmerie take much longer than others because we are in the human. The workforce needs to be beefed up. Five months after the launch of the parliamentary mission on domestic violence, the conclusions of which are due to be released at the end of March, the first leads are emerging. During a trip to Nantes on Tuesday, Renaissance MP Emilie Chandler and Centrist Union (UC) Senator Dominique Vérien asked for “more resources” for the police and the courts, while one in four files concerns this type of violence today.
After more than 300 hearings, the report (which aims to make proposals to improve the judicial treatment of domestic violence) should be inspired by good practices in France and abroad around the entire criminal chain. “With particular attention to the protection of victims, and in particular children, of whom 40 to 60% who live in these homes are also victims of physical violence”, explain Emilie Chandler and Dominique Vérien. “We must define a public policy which applies to the whole of French territory, which is not based solely on goodwill, so that there is similar judicial treatment from one department to another. A file listing all the women who have filed a complaint for domestic violence, as there are in Spain, is “an idea towards which we should move forward”, they believe.
Better information sharing
The two women want to approach the subject “not only from the angle of the offense and the person who commits it, but with a more global appreciation of the family unit”. For this, the sharing of information between the different parties must be facilitated. “In the vast majority of dramas, one or more actors were aware of” weak signals “which could have been shared to possibly trigger legal action”, notes the public prosecutor of Nantes Renaud Gaudeul. In its jurisdiction, two committees have precisely been created to allow the exchange of information between justice, the police and associations. One of them, the Comovif in place since last summer, aims to prepare for release from prison in the most sensitive cases, in particular for possible protection of the victim, but also for the reintegration of the perpetrator. .
