The Paris metro pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth II with plaques specially placed at the George V station – named after her grandfather – for the time of her funeral, the Paris transport operator said on Sunday. “We are joining the day of mourning by affixing, George V station on line 1, the plate “Elizabeth II 1926-2022””, explained a spokesperson for the RATP.
Three “Georges V” plates will be covered out of the six present in the station, Sunday evening, after the last metro. They will be removed Monday evening, she said. These plaques coincide with the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on September 8 at the age of 96. Hundreds of foreign dignitaries and crowned heads are expected in London on Monday for this occasion.
Georges V station, located in the chic districts of western Paris, bears the name of the sovereign who reigned over the United Kingdom from 1910 to 1936. His sons in turn occupied the throne under the names of Edward VIII and George VI, the latter being the father of the future Elizabeth II.
