The fight is progressing, but it still seems a long way from being won. “The pandemic (of Covid-19) will be over when we have reached a minimum vaccination coverage of 70%” of the world population, warns this Friday, in an interview with AFP, Hans Kluge, the European director of the Organization World Health Organization (WHO). He therefore deplores a “deployment of vaccination (…) still too slow”, including in Europe, where deconfinement is underway.
His fear comes in particular from the new variants, including the Indian variant, and their greater contagiousness. “We know, for example, that (variant) B.1617 (first identified in India) is more contagious than B.117 (first identified in the UK), which was already more contagious than the previous strain” , says Hans Kluge.
The manager still wishes to reassure by stressing that the vaccines currently work against these mutations of the coronavirus.
