As part of the Oscars, several films and actors have set new records. The special successes at a glance.

Times are changing in Hollywood too. The cinema is no longer the only focal point when it comes to films. This is proven by a special record set by the film “CODA” on Oscar night.

The Apple TV+ drama is the first film from a streaming service to triumph in the kings category. “CODA” was honored as the best film and was able to assert itself against streaming and cinema competition in the form of titles such as “Don’t Look Up” or “Dune”.

Troy Kotsur (53) shines in “CODA” in his role as a family man. He was able to hold his own against colleagues like Jesse Plemons (33, “The Power of the Dog”) and JK Simmons (67, “Being the Ricardos”) and thus became the first deaf male actor to receive an Oscar for a supporting role. It is also only the second time that a deaf star has been recognized for his acting. Marlee Matlin (56), who can also be seen in the film alongside Kotsur, received the 1987 award for best actress for “God’s Forgotten Children”.

Two directors in a row

New Zealander Jane Campion (67) won the award for best director for her western “The Power of the Dog”. After her screenplay Oscar for “The Piano” in 1994, it’s not just her second golden boy. She was also the first woman to be nominated twice for a director’s award. Although she was also suggested for “Das Piano” in this category, Steven Spielberg (75) won at the time with “Schindler’s List”.

For the first time, two women in a row were able to win the Oscar for Campion. Beijing-born Chloé Zhao (39) was the first Asian and only the second woman to be successful in the category in 2021 with her film “Nomadland”. Her US colleague Kathryn Bigelow (70) preceded her with “Deadly Command – The Hurt Locker” in 2010.

Spielberg was also involved in a record in 2022. Ariana DeBose (31) received the Oscar for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Anita this year for his “West Side Story” remake. It is the first time that a character has received two awards in this category. Rita Moreno (90) played Anita in the 1961 film musical “West Side Story” and was also honored as best supporting actress.

The first Oscars for Kenneth Branagh and Will Smith

Meanwhile, veteran actor, director and screenwriter Kenneth Branagh (61) received his first Oscar for his film “Belfast”. The drama won Best Original Screenplay. Will Smith (53) also received his first Oscar for the leading role in “King Richard”. However, the multi-talent’s victory was overshadowed by a resounding slap in the face. Smith attacked comedian and actor Chris Rock, 57, after he made a joke on stage about Jada Pinkett Smith, 50, the 53-year-old’s wife.

Lin-Manuel Miranda (42) was denied a particular success. The actor and composer could have earned EGOT status had he won the Oscar for Best Song. It stands for winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award at least once. Only a few stars like Andrew Lloyd Webber (74) or actress Whoopi Goldberg (66) have managed to do this so far. Miranda was nominated for “Dos Oruguitas” from “Encanto”, but the award went to Billie Eilish (20) and her brother Finneas O’Connell (24) for the Bond song “No Time To Die”.
