The US version of “The Office” is coming back. Without Steve Carell and a new setting, the NBC mockumentary takes place in the same universe.

In the USA there is a new version of the successful series “The Office”. As the industry magazine “Variety” reports, the new version was commissioned by the NBC streaming service Peacock. According to the article, this is not a classic reboot or a spin-off, but a new mockumentary series with a completely new cast, which, however, takes place in the identical universe as the original series. Work on the new version has been underway since the end of 2024.

According to an official statement obtained by Variety, the new series is about a “dying, historic newspaper in the Midwest” whose publisher is trying to save his product with a documentary film team. Filming is scheduled to begin in July, and Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson (40) and his Italian colleague Sabrina Impacciatore (56) are being discussed as the main actors.

Ricky Gervais is also involved again

A statement from an NBC broadcaster said that the series aims to build a new generation of fans of the format. The old “The Office” showrunner Greg Daniels (60) will also develop the new series and act as executive producer together with Michael Koman (47). Cult comedian Ricky Gervais (62) and Stephen Merchant (49), who launched the British original, are also on board.

The previous NBC series “The Office” ran from 2005 to 2013 with Steve Carell (61) as the main actor. There, a fictional film team accompanied the employees of the floundering Dunder Mifflin paper factory. The original British series “The Office” ran on the BBC from 2001 to 2003 and featured Ricky Gervais in the role of the oddball boss of a pier wholesale company. In Germany, the comedy series “Stromberg” with Christoph Maria Herbst (58) is based on the identical idea, but takes place in the context of an insurance company.
