the objective for full employment compromised?

In the last quarter of 2023, the unemployment rate as defined by the ILO stands at 7.5% of the active population. The rate is intended to be stable compared to the previous quarter of the same year, the rate of which was estimated at 7.4%. That is to say a very slight increase of more than 0.1 point, INSEE revealed this Tuesday, February 13.

The number of unemployed in France (excluding Mayotte) as defined by the International Labor Office (ILO) at the end of 2023 is 2.3 million people. The number recorded a slight increase of some 29,000 subjects in the last quarter of 2023 compared to the previous quarter of the same year. The unemployment rate in the ILO sense thus stands, in the last quarter of 2023, at 7.5% of the active population.

A rate which marks stability compared to the rate recorded in the previous quarter of the same year, barely increased by more than 0.1 point. These are the figures revealed by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee).

Slight drop in unemployment among young people and increase among older people

The institute also points out that the unemployment rate is 0.4 points higher than its level at the end of 2022, which was the lowest since 1982. But it remains clearly below its peak in June 2015, with minus 0.3 points. In detail, over the quarter by age category, the INSEE publication shows a drop of 0.2 points in the unemployment rate within the 15 – 24 year old category to 17%. This remains, however, at a level 0.6 points higher than in 2022.

On the other hand, for the 25 – 49 year old category, the rate once again increased by 0.2 points over the quarter to reach 7%. A rate which increased by 0.5 point compared to its level for the year 2022. There remains the category of “seniors”, for those aged 50 and over, the unemployment rate is established almost on a straight line with a stability over the quarter (barely -0.1 point) just like in relation to the previous year established at the same rate of 5.0%.

The classification by sex also shows stability well in place over the quarter with an unemployment rate for women which decreases by barely 0.1 point to 5.0%, while that of men increases by just over 0.1 % to reach 7.6%. Please note that the next INSEE publication relating to the 1st quarter of 2024 should take place on May 17 at 7:30 a.m., specifies the institute.
