After brother Gustav in “Vikings”, Alexander Skarsgard is now also becoming a Viking. In the trailer for “The Northman” he wants to avenge his father.

His brother Gustav (41) already played a Nordic warrior in the series “Vikings”, now it’s Alexander Skarsgard (45). In “The Northman” the eldest son of the Swedish noble man Stellan Skarsgard (70) plays a Viking who wants to avenge the death of his father. The film by cult director Robert Eggers (38, “The Witch”, “Der Leuchturm”) is due to hit cinemas in April 2022. Now is that first trailer appeared.

“The Northman” is set in 10th century Iceland and follows the Viking prince Amleth on his way to avenge the death of his father, who was killed before his eyes. He also wants to save his mother Gudrun from the clutches of his father’s murderer.

The names Amleth and Gudrun suggest: “The Northman” alludes to William Shakespeare’s classic revenge tragedy “Hamlet”.

Star surge in the Viking Age

In the beautifully archaic trailer, several top stars can be seen in addition to the title hero. Ethan Hawke (51) plays Amleth’s father in flashbacks, Nicole Kidman (54) the mother. Other top-class players who have already worked with director Robert Eggers are represented in supporting roles. “Damengambit” star Anya Taylor-Joy (25) played the leading role in Egger’s debut film, the historical horror film “The Witch” (2015). Willem Dafoe (66), whom Eggers staged in “Der Leuchtturm” in 2019 alongside Robert Pattinson (35), is also there.

Also at the start is the Icelandic giant Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (33), better known as “The Mountain” from “Game of Thrones”. And Iceland’s biggest pop star is also there: Björk (56) plays, how could it be otherwise, a witch.
