The nomination of the right-wing leader as prime minister will be debated in a month

The debate on the investiture as Prime Minister of the leader of the Spanish right, Alberto Núñez Feijóo will take place on September 26 and 27 before the Congress of Deputies, announced Wednesday the president of the assembly, Francina Armengol.

This announcement follows the designation Tuesday evening by the King of Spain Felipe VI of Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the People’s Party (PP), to try to obtain the investiture of the 350 deputies elected in the snap elections of July 23 . The sovereign appointed Alberto Feijóo after two days of consultations with political leaders, although the leader of the PP can only claim the support of 172 deputies, while the absolute majority, necessary in the first round, is 176 votes .

If Feijoo fails, Sanchez will have to find a majority

A simple majority is sufficient in the second round. Almost all the experts believe that Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s attempt is doomed to failure, but his rival, the outgoing Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, does not have a majority either since he can only count on 164 deputies.

The decision of King Felipe VI was therefore difficult. The Royal Palace had justified the appointment of the leader of the right in the evening by explaining that the People’s Party had “obtained the largest number of seats” on July 23. If Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s investiture vote fails, a two-month countdown will be triggered for Pedro Sánchez to try in turn to find a majority, failing which new elections will be called.
