The new youth initiative “Tocktock” of the Teamtheater – Munich

The transition from being a child to being a somewhat adult is not the easiest time for many: understanding and guiding oneself suddenly becomes important – because the boundaries between oneself and the outside world are becoming sharper, one wants and needs to learn to behave towards others assert. This is where the youth club “Tocktock” of the team theater comes in: It wants to offer young people a space – for the development of their own personality.

The manager of the “Teamtheaters gas station” in the Glockenbachviertel, Petra Maria Grühn, initiated the project, received funding from the Munich cultural department and entrusted two employees of the theater, the musician Philipp Kolb and the theater director Philipp Jeschek, with the implementation. Both have experience with youth work in the field of stage arts, Kolb through the project “Music to touch”, a music group for all ages from elementary school to middle school, Jeschek through the founding of the “Backstage Club” as a youth group of the Munich Volkstheater.

The weekly free course, which will initially run for one year, starts in September. Each course is scheduled for 90 minutes, but from July 20th to 22nd there will be “Tryout Days” and on July 23rd there will be a summer party where participants can get to know each other. The young participants should gain an insight into all areas that affect the theatre: from (theater) literature and drama to dance, film, music and light to stage design and make-up. In some cases, professionals working in the respective areas will help shape the courses: The two leaders Kolb and Jeschek want to impart knowledge with their courses – but above all allow free, own trying out. Recreating the “complete freedom” of the school theater group, which he himself experienced as a teenager, is a goal for him, says Jeschek.

A public performance will take place towards the end of the year if the participants want to show their work publicly. The two conductors want to avoid being forced to rehearse a piece. The courses are also about becoming more aware as a viewer, says Kolb: about developing an eye for the subtleties of a good theater production. The two directors would be particularly happy about a colorful mix of participants: Newcomers to the world of theater are also expressly welcome in the new youth group.
