the National Rally has more deputies than La France insoumise

La France insoumise will not be the main opposition group in the Assembly unless it ally with other elected officials. The National Rally is indeed the minority party with the most seats after the legislative elections.

A real victory for the National Rally. To everyone’s surprise, the far-right party won 90 seats in the National Assembly according to the count made by the Elabe Institute for BFMTV-RMC and The Express with our partner SFR. A score that could even make the RN the main opposition group in Parliament.

Indeed, if the Nupes obtained a total of 147 seats, the coalition would have to be divided into several distinct groups. In this case, if France insoumise (LFI), the Socialist Party (PS), Europe Écologie-Les Verts (EELV) and the French Communist Party (PCF) separate, none exceeds the 90 seats of the National Rally.

LFI, which has the most elected officials, has indeed won 84 seats of deputies, according to our count. Six less than the RN.

RN at a historic level

Olivier Faure, leader of the Socialist Party, however refuses to see the National Rally as the first opposition party. “We have formed an alliance that I do not want to see collapse after the election and we will continue to work together,” he said on BFMTV.

Anyway, this new power of the RN is historic. Indeed, never since 1986 has the far-right party obtained a group in the National Assembly. That year, 35 deputies had entered the hemicycle. With its 90 elected officials, the influence of Rassemblement national will be even greater.

Among the possible consequences: the filing of a motion of censure. It takes 58 deputies to be able to activate this lever which aims to overthrow a government. This in no way guarantees its success, since an absolute majority must be reached when voting on the motion to force the government to resign.

But the presidential camp remains vulnerable, since it does not have the 289 deputies to protect itself for sure from such a scenario, which only happened once under the Fifth Republic, in 1962.
