This is not the role of the National Assembly, replied its president to the presidential majority. The latter asked Yaël Braun-Pivet to sanction the left-wing deputies who participated in the banned rally in memory of Adama Traoré. But it is a decision that belongs to justice.
About 2,000 people, including a dozen LFI and EELV deputies, marched in Paris on Saturday in memory of the 24-year-old, who died seven years ago shortly after his arrest by the gendarmes. The rally had been banned by the police headquarters, which cited fears of public disorder after recent urban violence.
Sanctions that fall within the scope of justice
The behavior of these deputies “contributes once again to mislead and degrade the parliamentary function”, also denounced Yaël Braun-Pivet in a letter in response to the presidents of the allied groups Renaissance-MoDem-Horizons. By participating in this forbidden gathering, which is more girded with their tricolor scarf, they “knowingly flout the laws of the Republic”, points out the holder of the “perch”.
But the office of the National Assembly that she chairs is “not the appropriate body” to sanction the facts because they occurred outside the confines of the institution. “These behaviors appear to be fully within the jurisdiction of the judiciary,” said Yaël Braun-Pivet. At its next meeting on July 19, the office of the Assembly will however be able to discuss these facts.
An offense “
Tuesday during the session of questions to the government, the Keeper of the Seals Eric Dupond-Moretti had stressed that “participating in a prohibited demonstration is an offense”. He had suggested to the RN who questioned him on the subject to make a report.
In November, 36 deputies of the majority had already called in vain for “sanctions” from the Assembly against deputies participating in prohibited demonstrations, notably targeting environmentalists present in Sainte-Soline against a water retention project.
