Longer, harder, better? That’s the truth of the myth of the penis ring

A penis ring promises a long and hard erection – everything a man wants during sex. But does it keep the promise or is it even dangerous to use it? A urologist explains.
“Men are always ready,” sings Herbert Grönemeyer in his homage to the supposedly stronger sex. Behind the phrase hides the belief that many men have, that they can or must have sex anytime and anywhere and that for as long and for as long as they want. Unfortunately (or fortunately) reality speaks a different language. The penis does not always want to be like its carrier. There can be different reasons. Udo Jürgens explained: “The devil made the schnapps” – and used it to describe erectile problems after a night of drinking.
Penis ring against erectile dysfunction?
Men prefer to hide the taboo subject. You are looking – very masculine – for a workable solution. The penis ring promises to be just that. It should make the male erection longer, harder and more enduring. And that with simple physics, because the ring is pulled over the limb when it is slack and prevents the blood from flowing back when it is stiff. Even if the penis tries to quit early while sleeping, it remains hard.
And that is exactly what can be a problem. “A penis ring is inherently wrong,” explains Dr. med. Wolfgang Bühmann, specialist in urology and andrology, because the ring does not solve the real problem. Doctors speak of erectile dysfunction when a man does not get or cannot maintain an erection in more than two thirds of his attempts at sexual intercourse.
“Every man has had his experience with it at least once in his life,” says Bühmann. But it is only from the age of 50 that there are physical reasons. Before that, the psyche played a far more important role. The man and his ego – this is where the problem begins. “If sexual intercourse doesn’t work out, men fear that it will repeat itself,” he says.
Break the vicious circle
A vicious circle. The fear of failure goes against the self-image of the omnipotent man. “The problem begins with a huge disinformation that young men get from porn,” explains the doctor. This paints a completely wrong picture of sexuality and the role of the penis in it. If a man then does not correspond to this picture in reality, the frustration is programmed.
So it is important to untie the knot of fear and dependence on the success of an erection. And the penis ring doesn’t help. “First of all, men should know that their penis is not the decisive factor for a woman’s orgasm,” says Bühmann. The man unties the knot of his own fear as it arises: a failure must be turned into a success. “A Viagra tablet can help men to get and keep a sufficiently strong and sustained erection,” explains the urologist. Success increases the sexual self-confidence of those affected, the circle of fear is broken. And that’s why penis rings are not effective, says Bühmann.
In Germany the pills are only available on prescription. Going to the doctor is therefore inevitable. And men aren’t very good at that. “Men only go to the doctor if they have already had a heart attack,” says Bühmann. What a heart attack is in general medicine is a ring in the penis that can no longer be removed.
This is how dangerous penis rings can be
The metal specimens in particular lead to situations that man would rather do without. If they are too narrow, the blood can no longer drain from the penis. It remains swollen and the ring can no longer be removed. The desired effect of being ready at all times has a painful and dangerous price, which, if left untreated, can even lead to a lasting loss of erectile function. Quick help is required in an emergency.
Anyone who thinks that they are always in good hands in the hospital emergency room is often wrong. “Most practices and hospitals do not have the right saws to detach the metal ring from the penis,” says Bühmann. Only the local fire brigade, which has the special equipment, can help. And, according to Bühmann, it is not uncommon for her to keep a low profile with her humor. Nevertheless, the clinic remains the first point of contact, which then initiates the necessary measures.
The urologist also advises against penis rings made of plastic. They stretch a little, but letting men close to their limbs with scissors in this emergency situation is not a good idea. Anyone anyway Penis ring want to try out, should use models that have a closure.
They also hold back the blood and ensure a sustained erection. But there is one thing men should keep in mind: “The ring constricts the penis and, in the process, presses the urethra through which the sperm wants to go through at the climax,” says Bühmann. The penis ring makes the man’s climax correspondingly painful. “There are men who just want this pain,” but they are the exception, he says.
And the urologist also clears up another myth: “No penis ring helps against wandering testicles or undescended testicles, only a visit to the urologist”.
