The Munich doctor Veronika Wolter and her book “I hear you” – Munich

“I hear you” – that is a book title that only acquires its very special meaning in connection with the author: Doctor Veronika Wolter is Germany’s first deaf chief physician, she has been in charge of the hearing clinic at the Helios Clinic Munich West since July last year. At the age of nine Wolter fell ill with meningitis, first became hard of hearing, then completely deaf. Against all odds, she graduated from high school and studied medicine. She finally regained her hearing with a cochlear implant – a system that can replace damaged nerve cells – and is now a renowned expert in artificial hearing prostheses. In her recently published book (Verlag Riva), she tells how she turned her alleged weakness into her greatest strength and how she never lost sight of her desire to become an ear, nose and throat doctor despite all the obstacles and strokes of fate.
