The movement is picking up steam on TikTok

“Leave them free. This is the mantra of women who decide not to lock their breasts in anymore. This challenge called “No bra”, that is to say “without a bra”, starts from the TikTok video that has gone viral by a user by the name of Vaninileon. Since then, the trend has continued to gain ground. So much so that the hashtag “No bra” now has nearly 700 million views on the Chinese social network.

“No bra”, another way to advocate the liberation of the body

In his video, Internet user Vaninileon indicates some rules to follow to feel comfortable in public when you decide to separate from the bra. These include: wearing tighter tops to avoid boob bouncing, or not staring at people you’re likely to meet. “People will look at you and move on. (…) And if people linger on your nipples, tell yourself that you will never see them again. “, she says in her video, which has accumulated more than 36,000 views in a few days. Her words were praised by other young women in the comments.

We also owe the popularization of this movement to the many celebrities who wear more and more outfits without a bra. From Rihanna to Kendall Jenner via Kim Kardashian, no longer wearing underwire in public has become more democratic.

A trend that is not new…

This is not the first time that the “No Bra” movement has taken on such proportions. Already in 2018, blogs advocating the “slow bra” (wearing bras or “bralettes”) or the “one year without a bra” had swarmed the Web. Then the confinement was a decisive factor. In June 2020, 7% of women had drawn a line under the bra, compared to 3% before the start of the health crisis, according to an Ifop poll for Xcams, carried out on a sample of 3,018 people. Among the reasons that led these women to stop wearing them, we find at the top of the list: discomfort. But it is not the only reason.

A feminist fight is also hidden behind this choice of dress. Indeed, the study also reports that women under 25 see the “No Bra” movement as a way of fighting against the sexualization of female breasts, which requires women to hide their breasts from others.
