The metropolis is following suit… Already postponed from July 2022 to July 2023, the ban on the circulation of 380,000 polluting vehicles in the Greater Paris Metropolis (MGP), the largest low-emissions zone (ZFE) in France, has been postponed this Thursday to January 1, 2025 following a vote by the MGP council.
This third phase, which aims to prohibit vehicles classified Crit’Air 3 is “materially impossible” according to Patrick Ollier, the president of the MGP, in “the absence of tangible responses from the State” on the guarantee of the loan at interest rate zero and automated penalty control.
Elected officials accuse the government of wanting to get rid of the measure
Despite the opposition of elected environmentalists from the community and elected officials from the City of Paris, including Emmanuel Grégoire, Anne Hidalgo’s first deputy, the Council decided to postpone the ban because of its application, which had been made impossible by the lack of means of control and verbalization, but also because of the fear of the social movements which could result from it, in particular one year from the Olympic Games of Paris 2024.
The whole Council, members of both right and left, nevertheless agreed to maintain pressure on the government, accused of “procrastination” and of wanting to place the responsibility for this measure on the shoulders of local elected officials.
However, Patrick Ollier made a commitment before the assembly of elected officials to maintain the dialogue with Élisabeth Borne and the ministers concerned, including François Braun, Minister of Solidarity and Health, in order to obtain the guarantee of the loan at zero rate. And, if it is obtained, to anticipate a new vote on the application of the third phase of the ZFE.
