A few days ago, the footballer offspring Brooklyn Beckham, 23, and the American billionaire’s daughter Nicola Peltz, 27, got married. The tabloids documented the dream wedding with colorful photo spreads. A frequently printed image showed the young wedding couple getting ready to kiss his wife while she looked as cool as an ice cream angel in her tailor-made Valentino dress. All the more touching that he calls her “wifey” (mistress), as can be seen from the Instagram channel. In the waiting room of a dental practice in Lower Bavaria, the bride’s stiff appearance was viewed with skepticism. When looking at the pictures in a magazine, an older patient announced that she thought the haughty Nicola was a goof. In the animal kingdom, a Goaß means a goat or a goat (Old High German: greed). In the human context, the word Goass stands for a skinny, bony woman who tends to be complicated and go down in the basement for a laugh. In addition to this classic assignment, little girls who have screwed up something are also referred to as Goaß. Stubborn men, on the other hand, are associated with the attributes Goaßbock and Goaßhiater (goatherd). As linguistic extensions are known the Goassgschau (staring look), the Goassmass (drink) and the luck of the Goasspeterl (unexpected luck).

TV scholars Markus Lanz and Richard David Precht recently delved into Latin in their podcast. It was about the subject of work, which the Romans once described with the verb laborare. “That’s what the slave and the cattle farmer do,” explained Precht. Lanz brought up the word Servus (slave, servant) and explained that Servus is a greeting in South Tyrol. And in Bavaria the word radiates “something incredibly cozy”. The word became popular years ago when Thomas Gottschalk and Franz Beckenbauer greeted the television audience with Servus. The linguist Johann Andreas Schmeller did not know the word in the 19th century. Servus established itself in Bavaria during the First World War, when Adjes and Ade were no longer well tolerated because of their French origins.
