“The Masked Singer”
ESC legend Katja Ebstein revealed as Okapi
The German ESC legend Katja Ebstein has to leave “The Masked Singer” after one episode. She was under the okapi costume.
The first season of the ninth season of the ProSieben show “The Masked Singer” is history. And right in the opening episode, a real legend was unmasked: At the end of the show moderated by Matthias Opdenhövel (53), ESC legend Katja Ebstein (78) had to unmask herself. The singer and actress was under the okapi costume and previously performed the song “Iko Iko (My Bestie)” by Justin Wellington (45) and Small Jam.
In the end, her incredible stage experience wasn’t enough to move forward. Ebstein received the fewest votes from the audience and therefore had to leave “The Masked Singer” after just one appearance. “It was a sweaty thing,” Ebstein said Saturday evening after she dropped the mask. In the “ProSieben Aftershow”, Ebstein then specified her thoughts on taking part in the show. “This is kind of a crazy thing,” said the singer. The 78-year-old said about her opulent costume: “It’s a work of art.”
Katja Ebstein took part in the Eurovision Song Contest three times
Katja Ebstein, who was born in Lower Silesia, became best known for her participation in the then Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson (now the Eurovision Song Contest) in 1970 and 1971, in which she achieved third place each time. In 1980 she started again and was even able to improve to second place. She was also active as an actress, especially in the 1980s. Her biggest hits include “Miracles always happen”, “The Star of Mykonos” and “Theater”.
In recent years things have become increasingly quiet around Ebstein. She celebrated her last chart success in 2011 with a new recording of “Wunder sind immer immer” together with the German rapper JokA. The song stayed at number one on the hip-hop download charts for several weeks.
