The Römertopf ceramics company is insolvent. Because of the high energy prices and a significant drop in demand, the production site in Rhineland-Palatinate will probably have to close, according to the roaster manufacturer.

The manufacturer of the well-known Römertopf is insolvent. The Römertopf ceramics company from Ransbach in Rhineland-Palatinate has filed an application for insolvency proceedings at the District Court of Montabaur, according to documents published today. Accordingly, the lawyer Marcel Gast was appointed insolvency administrator.

Since Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the company has seen a sharp drop in sales, managing director Frank Gentejohann told the “Wirtschaftswoche”. In addition, there would be increased costs for energy, raw materials, wages and means of production. Production in Germany is expected to close, the 44 employees in Ransbach will be employed for three months.

More than 50 million Roman pots sold

After very good developments in the past five years, quite good Christmas business in 2022 gave hope again, said Gentejohann. However, since the announcement of the new heating law by politicians, this hope has been dashed. As a result, there was another “massive slump in demand due to consumer anxiety”.

According to the company, its roaster for cooking food in the oven has sold more than 50 million times since the 1970s. The Römertopf brand has been registered since 1997. According to the manufacturer, the Roman pot was invented in 1967 by the ceramics company Eduard Bay.
