The luxury hotel industry on a “seduction” mission to succeed in recruiting young people

“The Martinez hotel houses stars and recruits personalities. On its poster announcing its hiring day, this Wednesday, in view of the high season, the 5-star establishment on the Croisette is going all out. His communication was dusted off. From 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., he’s not going to do interviews, no. He will rather “cast his talents for the summer of 2022”. A bit like a telecrochet or a reality show.

“It will be more a moment of exchange than a strict job dating. We’re going to show the hotel, the most prestigious suites. We really have to be seductive,” explains Yann Gillet, the boss of the legendary Cannes vessel. And for good reason. “For a while, we have noticed a lack of love among young people who were usually much more numerous to come and apply to us, he continues. Today, they would all like to be influencers and not have to work evenings or weekends. »

A sector more than ever “under tension”

Add to this the effects of the health crisis, which has led certain regular extras in the hotel and catering industry to completely change course, and you find an area that is more than ever “under tension”, where the number of offers is very high. than that of candidates.

On Tuesday, in Nice, the Regional Tourism Committee (CRT) also sounded the alarm bell and recalled “the urgency” of finding staff, which is still missing, while the busiest period of the year is approaching and reservations are increasing. In the entire hospitality sector, 8,300 jobs are still to be filled in Paca.

Make schedules more attractive

And the luxury hotel industry is particularly affected by this deficit. “While these jobs can lead to permanent contracts and establishments are making great efforts to make jobs more attractive, particularly in terms of working hours”, explains Jean-Marie Poutz, director of the Pôle emploi Nice center agency and expert in hotel and restaurant sector.

He agrees: “For some young people, it is now inconceivable to work on weekends or when their friends are on vacation. But “the sector has organized itself to make the schedules more attractive. Many promise at least one weekend break per month. Which was not at all the case before, ”he assures.

“With or without CV, experienced or not”

Institutions have also broadened their search. “In Antibes, the Hotel du Cap Eden Roc recruits beginners, which it did not do before”, specifies the specialist. This is also what the Martinez offers, which invites the public to participate in its welcome day, this Wednesday, “with or without a CV, experienced or not”. “You just need to present yourself well and speak a little English,” explains Yann Gillet.

The Cannes hotel, which is still seeking to hire 150 people (in catering, accommodation, reception, engineering and maintenance, but also for its beach), specifies that “training will be provided upstream of the Position taking “. An effort is even made to make the title of these jobs more “selling”. “And less military,” explains the general manager of the Cannes hotel. For example, we no longer say team leader, we say waiter. »

Some terms are also Americanized. Forget “general housekeeper” and prefer instead “director of house keeping”. On the floors, there is no longer any manager either, it is the “managers” who are at work.
