“Lisbeth” was his favorite motif. During their eleven years together, August Macke (1887-1914) painted and drew his wife more than 200 times. Regardless of whether he immortalized her as a socially adept, self-confident intellectual in the large oil painting “The Artist’s Wife with a Hat” or portrayed her as a withdrawn pregnant woman in “Portrait with Apples” – Elisabeth always formed the center of his life. However, the pictures not only tell the story of a great, harmonious love, but also document all phases of the painter’s artistic development.
