The Louvre in Paris shows icons from Ukraine – culture

The two saints look out of the picture as if they were looking through a high window: They tower at the lower edge of the icon with a friendly look, the black-haired Plato in a gold shimmering robe, next to him Glycerie with softly falling hair. Other panels show Our Lady or John the Baptist. The icons that are on display in the Louvre in Paris from this week until November 6 in the exhibition “Aux origines de l’image sacrée” shouldn’t have been allowed to travel at all. The picture panels are too fragile, this one in particular: they are considered to be the oldest surviving icons in human history.
