Sahra Wagenknecht planned her big appearance at the federal press conference on Monday well. Amira Mohamed Ali, who was chairwoman of the Left parliamentary group until a few weeks ago, will also be there. Christian Leye, another member of the Bundestag, will also sit on the podium and answer questions about the new association “Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht”.
This appointment is a provocation for the party leaders of the Left, Janine Wissler and Martin Schirdewan, with whom Wagenknecht has fallen out for a long time. They have now reacted and are apparently trying to take control of the action again.

In a draft resolution that is to be passed tomorrow in the executive board of the party and the ARD capital studio is available exclusively, it is announced, among other things, that party exclusion proceedings will be initiated against those involved in the “BSW” association (“Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht”) and that, together with the responsible divisions, it will be examined how membership rights could be revoked.
The party executive also calls on all MPs who participate in the Wagenknecht Association to “resign the mandates they have won through the Left”. That is a commandment of decency.
Possible end for the left-wing faction
The Left board had asked Sahra Wagenknecht to resign from her Bundestag mandate months ago. However, Wagenknecht has announced that he will not do that.
If the Wagenknecht supporters resigned from their mandate, the party could fill the seats from its own ranks and thus potentially save the party’s parliamentary group status in the Bundestag. Because if even two MPs leave the group, they will be lost and with them speaking time, money and employees.
The Left faction would be a thing of the past at the latest when the Wagenknecht Association becomes a party – which political observers expect at the beginning of next year. Members of the Bundestag in one parliamentary group are not allowed to belong to two different parties.
“Our comeback begins today”
However, they have apparently now come to terms with the end of their parliamentary group status. Party leader Dietmar Bartsch is even said to have said that the party must now be buried with dignity.
The group leadership already spoke to employees last week. Social plans are even being worked on. Those who will remain in the faction and party are trying to be optimistic. The fact that Wagenknecht is founding his own party is also an opportunity for the left.
In its resolution paper for the fall, the party executive also calls for “protests against the right-wing symbolic politics and the federal government’s austerity and rearmament course” and announces a member offensive. The last point says: “Our comeback begins today.”
