Led by Laurent Turquois (DvD), mayor of Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire, the right indeed thought it was capable of becoming the majority in the Loire-Atlantique departmental council. Especially since the majority of the left for six years held only one canton ahead of the 31 in the department. Lost bet.
In the wake of an encouraging first round, the left, supported by the Socialist Party and environmentalists, finally won 18 cantons. Its majority is saved and even strengthened. It is its leader Michel Ménard (PS), 60, who should therefore become the new president of the Loire-Atlantique departmental council, succeeding Philippe Grosvalet (PS), who did not stand for re-election.

This result received with “pride, dignity and responsibility” by the Socialist confirms “the action carried out since 2004 by the departmental majority: with 36 elected, it comes out reinforced by this election”, rejoices Michel Ménard. “Our team will be able to take on a new mandate dedicated to the inhabitants and to an ecological and united Loire-Atlantique. The challenge will be to accentuate citizen participation in the service of a department that protects the most vulnerable and the environment in all regions, ”he adds.
The Nantes resident knows the house well since he has been in the department for 20 years. He was also a Member of Parliament for ten years (2007-2017).
Three cantons have evolved
In detail, three townships changed sides on Sunday. The cantons of Ancenis and Guérande swung to the left, while the canton of Saint-Philbert-de-Grandlieu was the subject of a duel on the right, the Paviza-Fetiveau (DvD) pair winning to the detriment of Stéphan Beaugé (Dvd) without the support of the main group on the right.
LREM and the RN do not manage to get any block.
