The “Left” in its Bavarian stronghold: When the core of a party is gone – Bavaria

Nowhere in Bavaria does the “left” play such a defining role as in the industrial city of Schweinfurt. But since Sahra Wagenknecht got serious, top officials there have switched to her side one after the other. A signal for all of Bavaria?

Agnes Conrad has herself under control. “It’s not easy,” she says, but that’s the worst possible formulation she can come up with. She would certainly have reason to be overwhelmed: Conrad is 26 years old and already leads the district association of the Schweinfurt “Left” – by no means any branch of the party. Nowhere in the Free State does the Left have more members, calculated per capita, than in the classic industrial city in northern Bavaria. Or should it say: had?
