Grades are controversial. They categorize, put a label that says good, mediocre or bad. And it doesn’t become more differentiated if one “good” is better than the other and one “bad” is worse than the other, because you can add a “very” or a “minus” to each. As a measure of quality, grades are very categorical – and therefore at least educationally controversial.
