The island suffers a breakdown of landline and mobile telephony

Since Tuesday evening, it has been difficult to communicate in Reunion. A breakdown seriously disrupted the fixed and mobile telephone network throughout the island, as well as Internet access in certain areas, the prefecture announced.

This breakdown was caused by a power outage that occurred in the afternoon in a district of the Saint-Denis prefecture where the technical center that manages the networks of the operator Orange is located. The emergency systems then “failed” around 10 p.m., affecting the network for the whole island, added the prefecture.

A return to normal scheduled for Wednesday morning

The emergency numbers remained in service but the prefect set up a series of alternative numbers to contact the police, gendarmerie and fire departments.

The supply of the fixed and mobile telephone network was restored at midnight, which should allow “a gradual resumption of fixed and Internet services in the next few hours on the whole of the island”, according to the prefecture. The Orange mobile network was to remain affected until Wednesday morning.
