From this Sunday, the heads of diplomacy of the G7 countries meet in the Japanese tourist town of Karuizawa. Discussions will, unsurprisingly, be dominated by growing Chinese pressure on Taiwan and the conflict in Ukraine.
The Japanese host of the summit will notably have the opportunity to emphasize his certainty that the Russian invasion only accentuates the need to redouble our vigilance in Asia. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, whose government approved a major revision of its defense doctrine at the end of 2022 in the face of the rise of Chinese power, has thus warned on several occasions that “Asia could be the Ukraine of tomorrow”.
